EC-Council COASP: What You Need to Know About the New Offensive AI Security Certification

 

EC-Council released four new AI certifications in February 2026. If you missed the announcement, that is understandable it was the biggest single expansion of their portfolio in 25 years, and the cybersecurity world had a lot to digest all at once.

But one of those four certifications deserves particular attention from penetration testers and red team professionals: the Certified Offensive AI Security Professional, or C|OASP.

Here is why it matters and why being early to this credential is genuinely valuable.

 

EC-Council Built COASP Because the Industry Had a Serious Problem

Think about what happened over the last two years. Organisations started deploying AI at speed. Internal chatbots, AI-powered customer support, LLM tools for legal and compliance teams, AI agents that could send emails and update databases. And virtually none of these systems were tested by security professionals who actually understood how to attack them.

Not because the security teams were incompetent. Because the knowledge did not exist in a structured, teachable, assessable form. Every pen tester understood networks, web applications, active directory. Nobody had a methodology for attacking an LLM's retrieval pipeline or mapping the trust boundaries in a multi-agent workflow.

IBM X-Force data from 2024 put the scale of the problem in numbers: 87% of organisations faced AI-driven attacks that year. OWASP documented ten critical vulnerability categories in LLM applications. And a 2025 CTF challenge run by HackerOne and Hack The Box found that fewer than half of the cybersecurity professionals who entered could complete a single AI security challenge.

C|OASP is EC-Council's structured answer to that skills gap. It teaches offensive AI security the same way CEH taught ethical hacking with a defined methodology, alignment to international frameworks, and an assessment that verifies applied skill rather than memorisation.

 

What COASP Covers (And Why the Framework Alignment Matters)

Every module in the C|OASP curriculum maps to one or more items in the OWASP LLM Top 10 and the MITRE ATLAS framework. This is not just an academic nicety it means that when you deliver an AI security assessment to a client, you can present your findings in terms they already understand and that their compliance and legal teams recognise.

Here is what the curriculum actually covers:

 

Module 1: Understanding AI Systems as an Attacker Does

You start by learning how AI systems are actually built and deployed transformers, tokenisation, model APIs, vector databases, agentic frameworks but from a completely adversarial perspective. Every concept is framed around one question: what does an attacker notice here, and what can they exploit? The MITRE ATLAS framework gets introduced as the structured vocabulary for AI attack techniques, equivalent to what MITRE ATT&CK gives traditional security assessments. Also covered: AI-specific OSINT techniques for mapping an organisation's AI deployment before you start testing.

Module 2: Prompt Injection — OWASP LLM #1

The first item on the OWASP LLM Top 10 gets a full module because it deserves one. We cover direct injection (manipulating the model's active conversation), indirect injection through external content the model retrieves or processes, multi-turn attacks that chain instructions across several conversation turns, and system prompt reconstruction the technique of reverse-engineering a model's hidden instructions through carefully crafted queries. Jailbreaking and guardrail bypass are also covered here, with particular attention to how different model providers handle these differently.

Module 3: Data Extraction and Adversarial Machine Learning

This module addresses what happens when the attack target is not the AI application but the model itself. Membership inference attacks can determine whether specific data was included in a model's training set which is legally significant when that data might include personal information it should not have. PII extraction from fine-tuned models exploits the tendency of models to memorise and reproduce sensitive training data under the right prompting conditions. Data poisoning deliberately corrupting training data to introduce backdoors or biases is covered as both an attack technique and a testing methodology.

Module 4: AI Agents and RAG Systems — The Complex Stuff

This is where the course gets genuinely challenging, and genuinely exciting. Multi-agent AI systems frameworks where models orchestrate other models, call APIs, write and execute code, and take actions in the real world have an attack surface that is unlike anything in traditional security. Cross-agent prompt injection can propagate malicious instructions through an entire automated pipeline. Tool call hijacking can redirect an agent's actions to targets its owner never intended. RAG pipeline exploitation can surface restricted documents and create cross-user data leakage. This module has the densest lab content in the course.

Modules 5 and 6: AI APIs, Infrastructure, and Professional Methodology

The fifth module covers the security of the infrastructure that AI systems run on: authentication weaknesses in AI model APIs, parameter manipulation, SSRF through AI tool calls, and misconfigured cloud AI services on AWS Bedrock, Azure OpenAI, and Google Vertex AI. The final module covers professional engagement methodology how to scope an AI red team exercise, how to produce a credible threat model, and how to write the professional report that turns technical findings into business decisions. This last skill is what separates consultants from technicians.

 

The EC-Council Brand and Why It Still Matters

Some people will ask: why not take a newer AI security certification from a smaller provider? There are a few good options appearing on the market.

Here is the honest answer. When you present your credentials to an HR manager at a bank or a government agency, they recognise EC-Council. The name on your certificate matters in hiring decisions, especially for first-time AI security roles where employers are still working out what credentials to look for. EC-Council has been building that recognition for 25 years. A newer certification from a newer body has to earn that recognition and your career cannot necessarily wait for that to happen.

C|OASP launched in February 2026. You have a window  maybe 12 to 18 months where being among the first certified professionals in India means you face almost no competition for the roles this credential opens. That window will close as the certification becomes more widely known and more people complete it.
